Herrenknecht technology has been recognised with an award at one of the world’s largest construction equipment events.

The company’s E-Power Pipe® was awarded a 2019 Innovation Award in the machine category at bauma, which took place in Munich, Germany, earlier this month.

Herrenknecht has developed the technology over the last two years as a method to install small-diameter cable protection pipes underground, with drive lengths of more than 1,000 m.

The procedure closes a technical gap in the market, allowing small diameter drives with greater lengths, shallower depths as well as high precision and speed.

The system comprises a fully remote controlled microtunnel boring machine, AVNS350XB, which has an excavation diameter of 505 mm.

Initially developed for longer drives, the method has been modified so that underground cables can be installed close to the surface, at a depth of 2–4 m and in precise alignment, allowing it to cross safely under existing infrastructure.

A member of Herrenknecht’s Management Board, Ulrich Schaffhauser, accepted the award on behalf of the company.

“In its first deployments, the E-Power Pipe method has already proven to be very convincing,” he said.

“Thanks to the trenchless installation of underground cables, it protects the environment to the greatest possible extent, allows for a rapid construction progress with high quality and is also very economical.”
