Wessex Water has won the UK Institute of Water’s Innovation Award for the utility’s new ‘re-rounder’ sewer repair equipment.
The prize was awarded by the southwest branch of the Institute of Water; the ‘re-rounder’ will now be entered into the national awards to be held in Belfast, Ireland in June.
Wessex Water’s robotic machine has been designed and manufactured to re-round 150 mm diameter sewer pipes which have suffered deformation of up to 25 per cent.
Wessex Water Rehabilitation Program Manager Julian Britton said the machine allowed for safer and more cost-effective trenchless sewer repairs.
“This new robot, named the ‘re rounder’, repairs the pipe to its original shape and then leaves behind a metal stent to secure the structural integrity of the pipe, over which we can then line,” he said.
Wessex Water is now using the equipment throughout its network.
Established in 1945, the Institute of Water is a professional body supporting the careers of those involved in the UK water industry.
