DNV GL publishes new standard

The new standard considers site investigation, engineering, planning and execution of pipeline installation through horizontal directional drilling (HDD).
DNV GL have created a new standard – DNVGL-ST-F121 – through a joint industry project (JIP) to provide a series of minimum requirements and best practices for all phases of pipeline installation.
DNVGL-ST-F121 aims to reduce the risks associated with HDD crossings – a trenchless technique that has grown significantly in the last few decades.
Despite its popularity, HDD crossings often present issues during execution with significant impact on cost and schedule; additionally, there are currently no methods for in situ repair of damaged pipelines installed by HDD.
These challenges drove the JID to address not only borehole stability and drilling activities, but all aspects related to pipeline integrity and create the new standard.
DNV GL Oil & Gas Regional Manager Americas Frank Ketelaars said it is confident in the standard’s long-term benefit considering operators, drilling contractors and engineering, procurement and construction companies consolidated their knowledge and experience of HDD during its development.
“DNV GL brought together a multi-disciplinary group of experts that resulted in a new standard that has established clear parameters, limits and criteria for essential issues related to HDD projects,” said Mr Ketelaars.
“We are confident that this standard will bring long-term benefit to HDD operations, reducing risk and improving quality.”
DNVGL-ST-F121 is part of a portfolio of approximately 80 DNV GL standards and recommended practices for the oil and gas industry.
